Agent Engineering

Senior Agent Engineer

Fixed Labs is building an agent platform for businesses that want AI to take on meaningful operational work. As a Senior Agent Engineer, you will embed inside the organizations we work with, turn complex and ambiguous processes into reliable agent systems, and own production outcomes across customer service and other business functions. You will remain highly hands-on while helping Agent Engineers develop the judgment and technical depth required to deliver at scale.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for an exceptional engineer with a demonstrated history of exceptional performance. Years of experience alone do not impress us. We care about trajectory, achievement, technical ability, judgment, and evidence that you have repeatedly done difficult things well.

We do not care which path produced the evidence. We care that the evidence exists and that, throughout your career, you have repeatedly been given difficult problems and found a way to solve them.

  • Built technically ambitious products from zero.
  • Been a top performer on a strong engineering team.
  • Founded a startup or worked as an early engineer at one.
  • Owned systems with meaningful production responsibility.
  • Built open-source projects with real adoption.
  • Shipped AI products used by real customers.
  • Led difficult technical projects others struggled to solve.
  • Demonstrated exceptional academic or competitive achievement.
  • Taught yourself new technical domains and became highly proficient quickly.

The role

You will operate at the intersection of engineering, AI, product, and customers. A customer may show you a process involving several employees, multiple software systems, spreadsheets, emails, undocumented rules, and dozens of exceptions. Your job is to understand it deeply enough to answer: how could an AI agent reliably do this? Then build it.

You will embed inside customer organizations, architect agent systems, build custom capabilities and integrations, deploy agents into production, investigate difficult failures, and turn what we learn into reusable platform infrastructure. You will also mentor Agent Engineers and help establish how Fixed Labs builds production agents.

Architect

Turn ambiguous business processes into reliable agent systems and make the important design decisions explicit.

  • Determine what should be agentic versus deterministic.
  • Define the context, tools, permissions, and integrations the agent requires.
  • Design how state should be managed across workflows.
  • Decide where humans should remain in the loop and how escalations should work.
  • Plan how exceptions are handled, performance is evaluated, and the system fails safely.

Build

This is a highly hands-on role. You will continue building while setting a higher technical standard for the team.

  • Build AI agents and agent infrastructure on the Fixed Labs agent platform.
  • Design tools, skills, context systems, and agent workflows.
  • Build integrations, APIs, and MCP interfaces where appropriate.
  • Create evaluations, test suites, and observability for agent behavior.
  • Debug complex production failures across models, tools, context, integrations, and customer systems.
  • Write production software when existing infrastructure is not sufficient.

Work directly with customers

You will lead technical discovery and implementation conversations. You need to move comfortably between “Show me how your billing team handles this exception” and “Here is how we are going to architect the system that handles it.”

You will translate messy human processes into technical systems without needing someone else to define every requirement. That includes customer service and other operational functions where reliability, judgment, and clear escalation matter.

Own production outcomes

Shipping is not success. The agent performing the job successfully is success. When something breaks, ask not only how to fix this instance, but what it teaches us and how to eliminate the entire category of failure.

  • Task completion.
  • Accuracy.
  • Autonomy and human intervention.
  • Customer corrections and recurring failure patterns.
  • Tool reliability.
  • Cost and latency.
  • Escalation quality.

High agency is non-negotiable

Fixed Labs is early. There will be missing documentation, missing abstractions, unclear requirements, customer edge cases, unfamiliar technologies, and problems nobody on the team has solved before.

If your instinct is to wait until someone tells you exactly what to do, this is probably not the right environment. If your instinct is “Interesting. Give me a little time to figure this out,” and then you usually do, you will probably enjoy working here.

Technical expectations

You should have strong software engineering fundamentals and meaningful experience across several of the areas below.

  • Python and/or TypeScript, backend engineering, APIs, and integration architecture.
  • Databases, authentication and authorization, cloud infrastructure, and distributed systems.
  • Production debugging, observability, and system design.
  • LLMs, AI agents, tool calling, context engineering, agent workflows, evaluations, structured outputs, and AI coding systems.
  • Experience with MCP, browser or computer use, multi-agent systems, agent observability, or production agent infrastructure is particularly relevant.

Leadership

You will help develop Fixed Labs Agent Engineers by reviewing implementations, debugging difficult problems alongside them, teaching engineering judgment, improving their customer communication, and progressively giving them more ownership.

We do not want you to become the person who solves every difficult problem. We want you to build a team capable of solving increasingly difficult problems without you.

What success looks like

Customers trust Fixed Labs with increasingly complex work. Our agents become more reliable with every deployment. Our Agent Engineers become dramatically stronger. Customer-specific solutions become reusable platform capabilities, and we become capable of deploying and operating an increasingly sophisticated AI workforce across many organizations.

We are looking for someone who wants an unusually high level of ownership and has the track record to justify giving it to them.

Job conditions

  • Remote.
  • Compensation: paid in USD.
  • English level: advanced.
  • Full-time, Contractor.
  • Schedule: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.
  • Paid time off: two weeks per year.
  • The role begins with a two-month paid evaluation period under a full-time contractor agreement.
  • At the end of the two-month evaluation period, continued long-term, full-time employment will be considered based on individual performance and current business needs. Completing the evaluation period does not guarantee continued employment.
