The best AI consulting firms for mid-market companies in 2026

For a mid-market company, the best AI consulting firm is one that plans and builds the work, has delivered for companies your size, and stays to run what it builds. This list compares 12 firms on exactly those points, from boutique implementers such as RTS Labs, Phos AI Labs and Fixed Labs to large firms such as West Monroe, RSM, Slalom and Accenture, using only what each firm publishes.

Most "best AI consulting firms" lists are written by one of the firms on them, and this one is too: Fixed Labs wrote it, and Fixed Labs is on it. So instead of a ranking, this guide puts every firm through the same four questions and shows the answers side by side, with a link to where each answer comes from. Facts were checked on each firm's own website on October 21, 2026. No firm paid to appear or asked to be included.

How the firms were compared

A mid-market company, roughly $5M to $500M in revenue, usually needs a partner that can do four things. These are the four questions applied to every firm below:

  1. Does it build and run the work, or only advise? A plan that needs a second vendor to build it tends to stall.
  2. Does it say it serves companies your size? Firms built for global enterprises price and staff for them.
  3. Does it publish anything about pricing or engagement shape? You should be able to tell whether a firm fits your budget before the first call.
  4. What happens after launch? AI workflows need monitoring, fixes and updates when your software changes.

Where a firm's site does not answer a question, the table says "not stated" rather than guessing.

The firms, one by one

Boutique implementers

Boutiques are usually closest to the work: the people who scope it often build it. Ask how many people would work on your account and what happens if one of them leaves.

Advisor Labs builds custom AI models, automation and Microsoft Copilot Studio and Azure AI solutions for finance, credit unions, architecture and engineering firms, higher education and healthcare. It advises and builds, and offers support after launch, starting with a fixed-price readiness assessment. Ask what the assessment costs and what the build that follows typically includes.

Clarinet, formerly ApplyAI, helps small and mid-size organizations adopt AI through leadership strategy, workflow redesign and training. It describes advising and training rather than building software, so it fits a company that already has a team or vendor to build. Ask who builds what it recommends.

Fixed Labs (that's us) is an AI implementation firm in Atlanta for established businesses doing $5M+ in revenue, with accounting, tax and advisory firms first. We find the recurring work worth automating, build it in the systems a company already uses, keep a person on every step that matters and run it after launch. A first workflow usually reaches production in three to six weeks. We quote a fixed build fee plus a monthly run fee after a discovery call, and we do not publish prices yet. Ask us for a system we built that is still running; the CPA billing engagement is one we can show.

P3 Adaptive builds data and AI on Microsoft's stack: Power BI, Fabric and Azure. It says its founder helped create Power BI and that it has worked with more than 600 organizations, from the Fortune 500 to mid-size companies. It offers a two-week starter project and fixed-budget projects. It fits best if your data already lives in Microsoft tools.

Phos AI Labs describes itself as "the AI department for $5M+ companies": strategy first, then builds, then a team that stays on. It is one of the few firms that publishes prices: discovery from $10K for firms under 100 staff, and implementation from $10K to $50K a month (one of its FAQs says up to $35K). Ask which figure applies to your scope.

Quantum Rise, founded in Chicago in 2024, offers "AI transformation for the mid-market": it builds AI agent systems, redesigns workflows and trains staff to own them. It does not publish pricing. Ask for the size of a typical first engagement.

RTS Labs, in Glen Allen, Virginia since 2010, is an applied-AI firm that builds AI, data and software "from pilot to production" for finance, insurance, logistics, real estate and private equity. It says a proof of concept takes four to six weeks and production about 90 days, and lists its pricing as project-based from about $15K. Ask what a production engagement costs, not only the proof of concept.

Mid-size and large consultancies

Larger firms bring broader services, such as audit, tax, ERP and change management, and more people. Ask who will actually build your workflow and whether a separate statement of work starts after launch.

Centric Consulting has more than 1,200 staff and offers AI strategy, governance, AI agent builds on Microsoft Copilot and Salesforce Agentforce, and managed services, with work in energy, finance, healthcare and insurance. It does not state a target company size or pricing.

RSM US is an audit, tax and consulting firm focused on the middle market, which it defines as companies with $30M to $10B in revenue. It advises, builds and supports AI work, mostly on Microsoft, and offers a free AI agent consultation. If you already use RSM for audit or tax, ask how its AI team works with those relationships.

West Monroe, in Chicago since 2002, calls itself "AI-native" and works "from strategy through execution", with a private-equity practice. Its site does not name a target company size. A third-party list, BestAIConsultingFirm, describes it as upper mid-market.

Slalom, in Seattle since 2001, covers strategy, data, cloud, AI and implementation worldwide. Its site does not state a target client size; BestAIConsultingFirm says it fits companies around $250M in revenue and up.

Accenture, based in Dublin, says it serves more than 9,000 clients in over 120 countries. It can run very large, multi-country AI programs; its site states no mid-market focus.

Which kind of firm fits a $5M to $100M company?

  • One or two workflows to automate: a boutique implementer that builds and runs the work usually gets you to production fastest.
  • A company-wide plan for a board or PE owner: a firm that does both strategy and builds, so the plan does not wait for a second vendor.
  • Data and reporting on Microsoft: a Microsoft-focused builder, or the AI team of the firm that already does your audit or ERP work.
  • A multi-country transformation program: a large consultancy, at a large consultancy's price.

Questions to ask any AI consulting firm

  1. Show me a system you built for a company like ours that is still running.
  2. Who exactly will build ours: the people in this meeting, a junior team or a subcontractor?
  3. What happens after launch, and what does it cost each month?
  4. What would you not automate in our business, and why?
  5. How will we measure whether it worked, and against what baseline?

A firm that answers all five with specifics is worth a second meeting. If you want to compare proposals line by line, use our guide to choosing an AI consultant, and see what to budget in AI implementation cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI consulting firm for a mid-sized company?

There is no single best firm. For a mid-sized company, look for a firm that plans and builds the work, says it serves companies your size, is open about how it prices, and stays to run what it builds after launch. Boutique implementers such as RTS Labs, Phos AI Labs and Fixed Labs focus on that segment; larger firms such as RSM and West Monroe also serve the middle market.

How much do AI consulting firms charge?

Few publish prices. RTS Labs lists project-based work from about $15K. Phos AI Labs publishes discovery from $10K for firms under 100 staff and implementation from $10K to $50K a month. Fixed Labs quotes a fixed build fee per workflow plus a monthly run fee after discovery. Most large consultancies do not publish pricing.

Should a mid-market company hire a big consulting firm for AI?

Only if the program is big. Large firms are built for multi-year, multi-country transformations and price accordingly. For one to three workflows, a firm that builds and runs the work usually reaches production sooner and costs less. RSM, for example, defines its middle market as $30M to $10B in revenue.

What is the difference between an AI consultant and an AI implementation firm?

An AI consultant decides what to do; an AI implementation firm puts it into production and keeps it running. Many firms do both. Ask whether the people who write the plan will also build it, and who owns it after launch.

How long should an AI consulting engagement take to show results?

Weeks, not quarters, for a first workflow. RTS Labs says a proof of concept takes four to six weeks and production about 90 days. Fixed Labs says a first workflow usually reaches production in three to six weeks. Ask any firm for a dated plan with a baseline to measure against.
